The Zambezi River plummets thundering a hundred meters straight down to make Victoria Falls. But before we get more into it, let’s take a little cruise on the river into the sunset. And they just happen to have a cruise for that here… aptly called, what else, the Sunset Cruise.
Also, just to end the suspense: the cruise boats actually keep a safe distance from the roaring waterfalls; after all, engines have been known to quit. You’re taken only close enough to where you can just see the mist rising from the Victoria Falls. But at least it’s in all the rainbow colors!
But that takes absolutely nothing away from the sunset cruise. Afford yourself the Signature Deck of the Zambezi Explorer Cruise Line, and you’ll be assured not only a view from the uppermost deck but also have access to a lively lounge and are treated to a never-ending snack service.
To confess, we were not as conscientious as usual in keeping track of all different courses so we won’t account for all of them here: but be assured that all the fare Isaiah served us tasted very good, in fact, so good that afterwards we could easily do without dinner.
But all along, of course, it’s nature that plays first violin here: besides the enchanting stillness on the river and the panoramic views, it is the birds that captivate us, and the hippos and the occasional crocodile! At each sighting, the captain considerately steers the boat so close that we can just about retract our zoom telescopes.
After each rush of excitement and gathering of photographers at the rail, we do manage to breathlessly exchange a few words – was that really a crocodile or just some branch after all? – and sink, the exhausted explorers, back into our lounge chairs, to restore ourselves by sipping from a gin and tonic and nibbling on our snacks.
Safari life is rough!
Many thanks to The Safari Source for the tip and booking this cruise for us!
