# Cliffhanger: the Alila Jabal Akhdar Design Hotel

> The Alila Jabal Akhdar is a clifftop luxury design hotel perched over dramatic canyon scenery in Oman's Al Hajar Mountains, renowned for its minimalist architecture, infinity pool sunsets, and cool mountain air above 6,500 feet.

## Destination
Al Jabal Akhdar Mountains near Nizwa, Sultanate of Oman, part of the Al Hajar mountain chain along the Gulf of Oman.

## Getting there
Approximately 220 miles and 3.5 hours from Muscat by road. A 4×4 vehicle is mandatory and strictly enforced at a police checkpoint near Birkat al-Mawz; car rental agencies provide a certificate confirming four-wheel drive. The mountain road is steep and winding but fully asphalted.

## When to go
Summer draws guests from Dubai and Muscat escaping 40°C flatland heat, as the elevation keeps temperatures roughly 20°C cooler. Winter attracts Europeans, though evenings drop to 5–10°C. Damask roses bloom March through May, painting the mountainsides pink.

## Why visit
The hotel combines spectacular cliffside canyon views, a design rooted in regional fort architecture, and a rare cool-climate escape within Oman. Sunsets over the infinity pool and the surrounding canyon landscapes are the defining draws.

## What to see
- **Canyon and cliff viewpoints** — Viewing platforms directly at the hotel overlook the deep canyons of the Al Jabal Akhdar range.
- **Terraced fields and mountain villages** — Traditional terraced agriculture clings to the steep slopes visible from the hotel and surrounding roads.
- **Nizwa Fort and Souk** — Major historic site and market town just before the mountain turnoff, easily combined with the hotel stay.
- **Bahla Fort** — Fort in the nearby town of Bahla, also known for traditional pottery used as decorative elements in the hotel.
- **Misfat al Abriyyin irrigation systems near Al Hamra** — Historic falaj irrigation network worth visiting on the drive back down into the valley.

## What to do
- **Infinity pool and sundeck** — The hotel's pool sits on the cliff edge with panoramic canyon views; canopy beds are set up poolside for sunset.
- **Cliffhanger rope traverse** — A 20-metre high ropes course spanning a cave mouth in the cliff face directly below the hotel.
- **High tea and happy hour on the view terraces** — Afternoon snacks served at 4:30 p.m. on outdoor terraces, followed by happy hour from 5 p.m.
- **Omani tasting menu at Juniper Restaurant** — A daily-changing menu of Omani dishes served alongside staples like hummus and pomegranates; Moroccan influences also feature.

## Good to know
Opened in 2014 and operated by the Indonesian-founded Alila Hotels group. Rates in November were approximately 600 CHF (~$600 USD) per night including breakfast and half board. Keep well to the right on the mountain road as local drivers take curves wide. A hot-water bottle is placed in beds during cold winter nights.
