# The Birchgrove-Balmain neighbourhood

> Birchgrove-Balmain is a historic, affluent inner-Sydney neighbourhood just 3.7km from the CBD, known for its waterfront parks, restored heritage pubs, quaint terrace houses, and a thriving café and restaurant scene.

## What to see
- **Gladstone Store** — Historic corner shop dating to 1886, set among a row of eight terrace houses with wrought iron balustrades, now serving coffee.
- **Ballast Point Park** — Former Texaco/Caltex oil storage site transformed into a public waterfront park with walkways, artworks, wind turbines, and Australian native gardens; industrial remnants preserved as sculptural features.
- **Birchgrove Oval** — Historic oval where the first professional NRL game was played in 1908, forming one end of Wharf Road's waterfront park bookends.
- **Unity Hall Hotel** — Restored pub dating to 1888, one of the largest number of restored pubs in Australia; site where the Labour government was formed in 1919.

## What to do
- **Dine at Blue Ginger** — Well-regarded Asian restaurant in the Balmain-Birchgrove area.
- **Dine at Mantecato** — Italian restaurant tucked on a suburban back street in the neighbourhood.
- **Shop at Zambelli** — Ultra-chic men's and women's wear boutique on Darling Street, Balmain, noted for an impressive tie selection.
