# The new Cantina Antinori — cultivating wine spectacularly in Tuscany

> The Nuova Cantina Antinori near Bargino, Tuscany is a striking architectural winery built by the Marchesi Antinori family, set largely underground into the vineyard and completed in 2012 at a cost of €67 million. Designed by Florentine studio Archea Associati under Marco Casamonti, it combines world-class wine production with a museum, restaurant, and remarkable engineering.

## Destination
Bargino, San Casciano Val di Pesa, Florence, Italy — about 40 minutes south of Florence by car.

## Getting there
Accessible from the Florence-Siena expressway via a dedicated ramp; a 870-meter earth-colored concrete driveway leads to the underground parking garage.

## When to go
Guided tours sell out quickly, so advance booking is strongly recommended; the restaurant Rinuccio 1180 requires a reservation.

## Why visit
A rare fusion of cutting-edge architecture and winemaking heritage: the bulk of the cellar is invisible, buried up to 26 meters into the hillside, while a dramatic cantilevered roof and iconic spiral staircase make it a destination in its own right.

## What to see
- **Cantilevered projecting roof** — A 21-meter cantilever clad with earth and grapevines, supported by 2.1-meter-high dual-T steel beams adapted to the terrain slope.
- **Iconic spiral staircase** — Weathering-steel staircase spanning 16.8 meters from the underground garage to the rooftop viewing platform, fabricated in 35 segments and welded on site.
- **Barrel cellars** — Monumental vaulted cellars with terracotta-brick ceilings and glass-block skylights looking down onto neatly stacked wine barrels.
- **Museum and visitor areas** — Offices, a museum, a shop, and an auditorium housed in a glass cube beneath the projecting roof, lit by large circular roof openings.
- **Rooftop viewing platform** — Accessible via the spiral staircase, offering views over the surrounding Tuscan vineyard landscape.

## What to do
- **Guided winery tour** — Tours move through the gravity-assisted production levels from grape delivery to bottling; must be booked in advance as they sell out.
- **Wine tasting at Restaurant Rinuccio 1180** — Tours conclude with a tasting of Antinori wines in the restaurant named after the family's forefather; reservation essential (+39 055 2359720).

## Good to know
Wines produced at Bargino include Villa Antinori, Chianti Classico Pèppoli, Chianti Classico Riserva Marchesi Antinori, and Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. Annual production is three million bottles. The winery has been led since the 26th generation by CEO Albiera Antinori, the first woman at the helm of the dynasty.
