# Hiking Through Costa Rica’s Jungle

> Costa Rica rewards hikers with four distinct forest types — tropical rainforest, dry forest, cloud forest, and mangrove — and this article traces a south-to-north road trip covering the country's best jungle hikes, from Pacific coast waterfalls to the misty Monteverde highlands.

Costa Rica, following a south-to-north route along the Pacific coast (Uvita, Dominical, La Fortuna) and into the highlands (Monteverde), covering national parks and private reserves.

## Getting there
A rental car with 4×4 capability is recommended, especially for gravel roads to places like Nauyaca Waterfalls. The route runs from the southern Pacific coast northward through La Fortuna and up to Monteverde at around 1,500 m elevation.

## When to go
Start hikes early to beat heat, crowds, and afternoon fog. Humpback whales visit from December–April (Arctic migration) and July–October (Antarctic migration). Monteverde gets foggier and busier in the afternoon. The chocolate and coffee tour is recommended for rainy days when hiking is unappealing.

## Why visit
Costa Rica's wildlife and dramatic landscapes — lava fields, cloud forests, multi-tiered waterfalls, and turquoise rivers — are best experienced on foot, with biodiversity that includes monkeys, sloths, hummingbirds, blue morpho butterflies, and even fluorescent scorpions.

## What to see
- **Arenal 1968 Park** — Hike through contrasting cooled lava fields and tropical rainforest; around 500 steps, entry ~USD 28, sturdy footwear essential.
- **Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (Continental Divide Trail)** — Mystical cloud forest on the continental divide with 2,500+ plant species, enormous ferns, and lichen-draped trees; entry USD 29, bring a rain jacket.
- **Lower Nauyaca Waterfall** — Broad wall of water plunging into Costa Rica's best natural swimming pool; 3.5 km trail, start early, bring water shoes.
- **Marino Ballena National Park** — Walk the whale's-tail sandbar at low tide and watch water surge in from two sides; humpback whale-watching tours available (USD 70–90).
- **Rio Celeste & Tenorio National Park** — Two mineral-rich streams meet and turn the river a glowing turquoise blue; waterfall with deep-blue lake, but heavy mosquitoes — bring repellent.
- **La Fortuna Waterfall** — 70-meter waterfall into an emerald pool reached by a steep 500-step descent; entry USD 20, non-slip shoes and swimwear required.
- **Manuel Antonio National Park** — Famous for white-sand beaches backed by rainforest and three monkey species; best feature is the Cathedral Point loop trail, but the park is considered overrated and crowded.
- **Mistico Park (Suspension Bridges)** — 16-bridge jungle loop including 6 suspension bridges up to 55 m high and 97 m long, offering treetop rainforest perspectives; entry USD 32, sturdy shoes required.

## What to do
- **Whale watching at Uvita** — Guided boat tour to see humpback whales surfacing close to the vessel; 2–3 hours, USD 70–90, expect to get wet boarding.
- **Chocolate and coffee tour with Don Juan (La Fortuna)** — Guided tour covering growing and processing of chocolate and coffee, ending with hands-on chocolate grinding; ~USD 50, bookable via GetYourGuide.
- **Night walk near Santa Elena (Monteverde)** — Guided 1.5–2 hour night hike revealing scorpions fluorescing turquoise under UV light and tarantulas; a guide is essential to spot anything.
- **Swimming at Lower Nauyaca Waterfall** — Natural pool beneath the falls is the reward after the jungle hike; rocks are slippery so water shoes are advised.
- **Swimming at La Fortuna Waterfall** — A second smaller pool behind the main basin offers a cold swim; best visited early morning for fewer crowds and more active wildlife.

## Good to know
Book Manuel Antonio tickets in advance via the official SINAC platform to avoid pressure tactics at the entrance; the park is closed Tuesdays. At Mistico Park, sturdy footwear is checked at the entrance. Monteverde sits at ~1,500 m and can be 10°C cooler than the coast — pack a rain jacket and light down jacket. A 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended for Nauyaca. The article's top three hikes are Arenal 1968 Park, the Monteverde Continental Divide Trail, and Lower Nauyaca Waterfalls.
