# Costa Rica Road Trip: 2.5-Week Pacific Coast Route with Arenal & Monteverde

> Costa Rica's Pacific coast packs beaches, volcanoes, cloud forest, and wildlife into a single 2.5-week self-drive road trip from San José to Liberia, covering six stops including Uvita, Manuel Antonio, Arenal, Monteverde, Papagayo, and Tamarindo.

Costa Rica, Pacific coast — starting from San José airport and ending at Liberia airport, covering the southwest and northwest of the country.

## Getting there
Edelweiss Air flies direct from Zurich to San José. An open-jaw ticket (in San José, out Liberia) saves several hours of backtracking. A 4x4 SUV rental is essential; many lodges and park turnoffs are on steep, unpaved gravel roads.

## When to go
Costa Rica has a tropical climate year-round. High season (December–April) offers reliably sunny days. The green season (May–November) brings more rain but striking natural phenomena. Temperatures vary by region and elevation.

## Why visit
Extraordinary biodiversity compressed into a small country — within a few hours you can move from Pacific beaches to volcanic landscapes to tropical rainforest to mystical cloud forest, with wildlife encounters throughout.

- **Marino Ballena National Park, Uvita** — Sandbar shaped like a whale's tail fluke; humpback whales pass through seasonally to give birth.
- **Nauyaca Waterfalls** — Spectacular multi-tiered waterfalls reached via a steep jungle hike; the lower fall drops into a swimmable natural pool.

## Good to know
Entry requires a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival. Spanish is the national language but English is widely understood. Currency is the Costa Rican Colón; US dollars accepted in many tourist areas. Costa Rica is one of the most expensive countries in Central America — expect 13% VAT plus a 10% tip on top of already high restaurant prices. Book popular national parks like Manuel Antonio online in advance as daily visitor numbers are capped. Schedule long transfer days on Sundays when truck traffic clears from narrow country roads.
