# Desert Nights Camp – a detour into the desert

> Desert Nights Camp is a luxury Bedouin-style tented camp on the northern edge of Oman's Wahiba Sands desert, offering sunset dune excursions, camel rides, and an overnight stay in the vast 3,800-square-mile inland desert.

## Destination
Wahiba Sands (Wahiba desert), Oman — approximately 6.8 miles from Al Wasil along a gravel and sand track.

## Getting there
Turn off the asphalt highway at the small yellow mosque in Al Wasil; two large signs mark the route to Desert Nights Camp and the adjacent Arabian Oryx Camp. A tire shop next to the mosque offers pressure adjustment for sand driving, though camp staff say it is not necessary for large SUVs on this flat route at speeds under 40 mph.

## When to go
The authors visited in November, noting nights were surprisingly warm but cool enough to require down jackets later in the evening.

## Why visit
The Wahiba Sands offers dramatic, ever-shifting dune colors at sunset, a historic Bedouin landscape, and an immersive overnight desert experience described as one of the highlights of any Oman trip.

## What to see
- **Wahiba Sands dunes** — Vast dune landscape stretching over 3,800 square miles whose colors shift from golden yellow to brown to red as the sun sets.
- **Sunset from the dunes** — Camp guests are driven by SUV to a high dune overlooking the camp to watch the sunset together.

## What to do
- **SUV dune excursion** — Camp drives guests into the dunes at speed for the nightly sunset gathering.
- **Camel ride** — A short ride around the camp is included in the nightly rate; longer four-hour and all-day rides into the desert are also available.
- **Buffet dinner** — An evening buffet is included in the tent rate of just under 300 Swiss Francs per night.

## Good to know
Luxury tents are modelled on traditional Bedouin tents but include modern comforts. No stirrups are provided on the camel saddles, which guests found uncomfortable. Keeping tire pressure normal is sufficient for the flat sand track to the camp, but lowering pressure is advised for routes to more distant camps such as the Nomadic Desert Camp.
