# EXPO 2015 MILAN – Let’s not forget about Milan!

> Milan, often overshadowed by EXPO 2015, rewards visitors with a rich mix of iconic architecture, vibrant canal-side neighbourhoods, a lively Chinatown, and excellent food. The article shares three neighbourhood-focused bites of the city taken alongside an EXPO visit.

## What to see
- **Piazza del Duomo & Milan Cathedral** — The vast square in front of the cathedral is a must; a large concert stage occupied much of it during the visit.
- **Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II** — Worth entering for the impressive dome and elaborate floor pattern rather than the luxury shops.
- **Leonardo Da Vinci Exhibit (near Piazza della Scala)** — A spontaneous find at the end of the Galleria passage; a similar exhibit was also heading to Switzerland.
- **Porta Nuova** — A large modern development area featuring hanging gardens and monumental contemporary architecture — striking and un-classically Italian.
- **Milan Chinatown (near Porta Garibaldi)** — A narrow street of small shops mixing kitsch and antique handicrafts; reachable by metro to Porta Garibaldi or Tram No. 14.
- **Navigli (Canals)** — Former transport arteries now a booming district; especially lively in the evenings and on Saturday mornings when a flea market runs along the canal bank.

## What to do
- **Flea Market along the Navigli** — A Saturday morning market winding along the canal bank — easy to lose track of time browsing the stalls.
- **Mercato Metropolitano** — A large, animated market hall near the Navigli focused on sustainability and innovation; recommended for the lively atmosphere.
- **Gelato at GROM** — Tried twice during the trip, with a stop near the Piazza della Scala; highly recommended.
- **Lunch at IL MONTALCINO** — Garden restaurant near the Navigli; the fresh artichoke and aged parmesan salad was a highlight.
- **Dinner at RADICETONDA** — A vegan restaurant discovered by chance near Porta Ticino; featured on Marie Claire's list of 10 vegan restaurants to put on your bucket list.

## Good to know
Milan's metro is the practical way to move between neighbourhoods — Porta Genova for the Navigli, Porta Garibaldi for Chinatown. Tram No. 14 also reaches the heart of Chinatown. Other restaurants noted but not visited include Mamma Rosa, Trattoria Madonnina, Pavé Bakery, and Giulio Pane e Ojo.
