# Hiking Paradise in the Swiss Engadin Valley

> The high Engadin Valley in Switzerland is a hiker's paradise of mountain panoramas, sparkling lakes, and glaciers, best explored from the tranquil village of Bevers with free transport passes covering funiculars, buses, and mountain railways across the region.

## Destination
Engadin Valley, Graubünden, Switzerland — centred on the village of Bevers, with easy access to Muottas Muragl, Pontresina, and St. Moritz.

## Getting there
Swiss International Air Lines serves Switzerland; a Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, funiculars, and mountain railways. The train station in Bevers is directly across from Bever Lodge.

## When to go
The article describes warm autumn sunshine at altitude, suggesting autumn is a rewarding season; snow patches were present on higher trails such as Piz Nair.

## Why visit
The valley combines world-class hiking on trails through larch forests, alpine streams, and past 3000m peaks with sweeping views of glaciers and sapphire lakes, all largely accessible by free public transport for lodge guests.

## What to see
- **Muottas Muragl** — Viewpoint at 2454m reached by the 1907 funicular — oldest in Graubünden — with panoramas of the Inn River lakes, Bernina Massif, and Morteratsch Glacier.
- **Piz Nair (3057m)** — Summit above St. Moritz reached by two funiculars and a cable car, offering a mind-boggling panorama of dozens of peaks all above 3000m.
- **St. Moritz** — Glamorous resort town on the shores of its namesake lake, encircled by mountains, with designer boutiques, heritage buildings, and the 1884 Cresta toboggan track nearby.
- **Bevers village** — Tranquil 700-person village with a tall-spired church and four- to five-storey houses decorated in traditional Engadin sgraffito plasterwork.
- **Morteratsch Glacier** — Visible from Muottas Muragl as part of the snow-covered Bernina Massif backdrop.

## What to do
- **7km Panorama Trail** — Mainly downhill walk from Muottas Muragl around Schafberg mountain through larch woodland, passing Unterer Schafberg restaurant and ending at Alp Languard — described as one of the most beautiful walking tracks on the planet.
- **Ride the 1907 Muottas Muragl funicular** — Historic funicular, the oldest in Graubünden, running from Punt Muragl valley station to the 2454m summit.
- **Hike down from Piz Nair to Corviglia** — Steep, rocky descent past snow and ice with dramatic views, finishing at the Corviglia funicular station.
- **Explore Bevers sgraffito architecture** — Walk the village streets to see intricate Italian-influenced plasterwork depicting ibex, deer, elephants, and bears around windows and arched doorways.
- **Fairytale Path through Val Bever** — A trail to Spinas created by local Engadin authors and sculptors with six stations depicting fairytale scenes — the article notes it for a future visit.

## Good to know
Bever Lodge provides guests with free public transport cards covering buses, funiculars, and mountain railways across the region, including St. Moritz, plus walking sticks and sunblock on request. At altitudes above 3000m mild altitude symptoms such as a rocking sensation are noted by the authors.
