# Hiking on the Rigi – the Queen of Mountains

> The Rigi Massif in central Switzerland, known as the 'Queen of Mountains,' offers over 120 km of hiking routes with sweeping panoramas of Lake Lucerne and 13 lakes, accessible by historic cog railway or cable car from Vitznau, Weggis, or Küssnacht.

## Destination
Rigi Massif, central Switzerland; summit at Rigi Kulm (1,798 m), with key stops at Rigi Kaltbad (1,433 m) and Hinterbergen (1,100 m).

## Getting there
Cog railway from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm (first in Europe, opened 1871, includes historic steam locomotives); cable cars from Weggis, Vitznau, or Küssnacht. Small 4-person cable car connects Hinterbergen to Vitznau (CHF 8 one-way, cash only).

## When to go
Summer for hiking and the giant Swiss flag event (hoisted each August 1); winter wandering routes also available.

## Why visit
Spectacular 360-degree alpine panoramas, a network of varied hiking trails, a historic cog railway, and landmarks like the Mario Botta–designed Mineral Bath make Rigi a rewarding day out from the Lucerne region.

## What to see
- **Rigi Kulm Summit (1,798 m)** — Highest peak with a 360-degree panorama, transmitter antenna, mountain chapel, and hotel terrace.
- **Känzeli Vista Point** — Bench-marked viewpoint on the Rigi Classic route offering views of Lake Lucerne and Zugersee.
- **Mineral Bath, Rigi Kaltbad** — Architectural landmark designed by Mario Botta; ideal for relaxing after a hike.
- **Chapel of the Rocks (Saint Michael), Rigi Kaltbad** — A slightly hidden chapel worth seeking out in Rigi Kaltbad.
- **Giant Swiss Flag, Steigelfadbalm-Dossen** — A 25×25 m, 750 kg flag hoisted each Swiss National Day (August 1) on the Rigi south face above Vitznau.
- **Old Railroad Bridge near Unterstetten** — Remnant of the former Scheidegg railway line, passed on the Natural Treasures Trail.

## What to do
- **Rigi Classic Hike** — Easy 4 km downhill walk (312 m descent) from Rigi Kulm via Staffel, Staffelhöhe, and Känzeli to Rigi Kaltbad; approx. 1 hour.
- **Way of Natural Treasures Hike** — 6.2 km mountain hike (100 m up / 450 m down) from Rigi Kaltbad via Felsenweg, Unterstetten, Seeweg, and Glettialp to Hinterbergen; approx. 2.5 hours.
- **Vitznau–Rigi Kulm Cog Railway Ride** — Historic rack railway with steam locomotives; the first cog railway in Europe (1871), still operating 17 original pieces of equipment.
- **Hinterbergen Cable Car** — Four-person cable car descent from Hinterbergen back to Vitznau; self-service ticket machine available outside staffed hours.

## Good to know
The cable car from Hinterbergen to Vitznau accepts cash only. The Mineral Bath in Rigi Kaltbad is a popular post-hike stop. Switzerland has more cog railways per square kilometer than any other country in the world.
