# Mowani Mountain Camp: Namibian sunsets at their best

> Mowani Mountain Camp is a thatched-chalet lodge tucked among boulder formations in Damaraland, Namibia, drawing visitors with spectacular sunsets, rare desert elephants, and ancient rock engravings nearby.

## Destination
Located in southern Damaraland, northwest Namibia, just off the gravel road west of Khorixas, hidden among large round boulders.

## Getting there
Easily reached on well-maintained gravel roads as part of a Namibia circular self-driving tour; a two-night stay is recommended.

## Why visit
The camp offers a unique combination of dramatic rocky landscape, celebrated sundowner evenings with views over the Aba Huab Valley, guided wildlife drives in search of rare desert elephants, and proximity to the UNESCO-listed Twyfelfontein rock engravings.

## What to see
- **Sundowner rock slab** — Chairs and cushions are set up on a large rock every evening for gin-and-tonic sundowners with panoramic views over the rugged Aba Huab Valley.
- **Desert elephants, Up River Valley** — Rare desert-adapted elephants that trek along the Up River Valley riverbed in search of water, spotted on guided dawn drives.
- **Twyfelfontein rock engravings** — A UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2007) about 20 km from the camp, considered one of Africa's most important rock-engraving sites.
- **Damaraland landscape** — Steppe desert and craggy rock formations stretching between the Ugab and Huab rivers, described as resembling a Martian landscape.

## What to do
- **Guided game drive** — Early-morning 4x4 safari through Damaraland with a local Bushwoman guide in search of desert elephants and other wildlife such as giraffe.
- **Visit Twyfelfontein** — Guided tour of the ancient Bushmen rock paintings and engravings with interpretation of the site's heritage.

## Good to know
Dawn game drives can be very cold due to wind chill; fleece, down jackets, and ponchos are advisable. Tracks can become heavily waterlogged, and lions have been reported in the area.
