# Storchen Hotel Zurich – Savoir-faire with tradition

> The Storchen Hotel in Zurich is a five-star riverside landmark dating back to 1357, celebrated for its blend of 660 years of heritage with a refined 2017 renovation that preserved its historic soul while modernising every detail.

## Destination
Storchen Hotel, Weinplatz 2, 8001 Zurich, Switzerland, on the banks of the River Limmat in the heart of the Old Town.

## Getting there
A short walk from Zurich main train station; alternatively, guests can arrive by tram from Limmatquai or by the hotel's own riverboat service from its private jetty on the Limmat.

## When to go
The article describes a sunny autumn visit, though the hotel's central location and indoor dining and bar facilities make it suitable year-round.

## Why visit
One of Zurich's most storied hotels, the Storchen combines centuries of hospitality tradition with impeccable service, exceptional cuisine using produce from its own farms, and an unrivalled riverside setting with views of the Grossmünster, St. Peterskirche and the Swiss Alps.

## What to see
- **River Limmat and Weinplatz** — The hotel fronts both; the square hosts a colourful Saturday market and the river sees constant boat traffic.
- **Grossmünster Cathedral** — The iconic twin steeples are visible from the hotel's Terrace Restaurant directly across the river.
- **St. Peterskirche** — Its large clock face and spire appear to rise from the hotel roof when viewed from the opposite bank.
- **Rathaus (Town Hall)** — Sits directly opposite the hotel across the Rathaus Brücke.
- **Lake Zurich** — Reachable by riverboat from the hotel's jetty; snowy Alps are visible on the horizon.
- **Guild crests display** — An impressive array of historic guild crests is shown in the Cigar Bar windows and a glass case on the first floor.

## What to do
- **Riverboat cruise** — Board from the hotel's own jetty for a scenic cruise along the Limmat to Lake Zurich.
- **Dine at the Terrace Restaurant** — Offers panoramic views of the river, swans, cathedral and Alps; a signature dining experience.
- **Dine at Barchetta and Piazza** — Popular spots for modern Italian cuisine; the vitello tonnato is recommended.
- **Dine in the Rôtisserie Restaurant** — Elegant historic dining room with original parquet floor, chandeliers and an exceptional wine list; also the venue for breakfast.
- **Visit the Cigar Bar** — Traditional wood-panelled bar with stained-glass guild-crest windows; offers 30 cigar varieties and whiskey, rum or port.
- **Explore the Old Town on foot** — The hotel is a short walk from major sights; cobblestones are noted as tricky for wheeled luggage.

## Good to know
The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2011 and part of The Living Circle group, which includes farms, orchards and vineyards in Switzerland; toiletries and some restaurant ingredients come from their own Terreni alla Maggia farm in Ascona. Rooms use traditional metal keys rather than plastic key cards. 66 rooms and suites were fully renovated and reopened in February 2017.
