# Bilbao: from industrial ugly duckling to designer swan

> Bilbao transformed from a struggling industrial port city into a premier cultural destination, anchored by Frank Gehry's iconic Guggenheim Museum and complemented by world-class gastronomy, striking architecture, and a revitalized riverfront.

## Getting there

## Good to know
Athletic Bilbao tickets are hard to obtain; queue early. The Bilbao tourist office on the riverfront offers staffed windows and interactive multimedia information stations. The Tayko Hotel in industrial-chic style sits on the edge of the Old Town and houses the Patri bistro by Martín Berasategui; nearby alternatives include the NYX Bilbao and Barceló Bilbao.
