# A winter hike to Fluhalp — Matterhorn (almost) always in view

> A gentle winter hike above Zermatt from the Blue Lounge to the Fluhalp mountain restaurant, tracing a glacial moraine with near-constant Matterhorn views throughout.

## Destination
Zermatt, Switzerland — the trail runs from the Blue Lounge at mid-mountain to Fluhalp at 2,620 metres above sea level, skirting the Stellisee lake along a groomed winter hiking path.

## Getting there
Reach the Blue Lounge via the Sunnegga, Gant, Patrullarve or Blauherd-Rothorn Paradise cable railways, or on foot via Findeln and Paradise or Tuftern. The return to Zermatt can be made via the Sunnegga gondola and a walk down along the Findelnbach creek.

## Why visit
The route offers uninterrupted Matterhorn panoramas in both directions, a leisurely gradient suitable for winter walkers, and a rewarding lunch stop at the Fluhalp hotel with its sun terrace and mountain backdrop.

## What to see
- **Matterhorn panorama** — Visible almost continuously from the Blue Lounge terrace all the way to Fluhalp and on the return.
- **Stellisee lake** — Famous for its mirror reflections of the Matterhorn at sunrise; passed en route to Fluhalp.
- **Adlerhorn and Strahlhorn peaks** — Form the dramatic backdrop directly behind the Fluhalp hotel and restaurant.
- **Weiler Findeln** — A picturesque hamlet with wooden chalets and multiple restaurants, reachable as an optional detour on the way back.

## What to do
- **Winter hike Blue Lounge to Fluhalp** — Easy, well-groomed trail along a glacial moraine with minimal elevation gain.
- **Lunch on the Fluhalp sun terrace** — Menu includes sliced fried potatoes with bratwurst, fondue, and the house speciality 'evil coffee' — espresso with plum or apricot brandy and cream.
- **Photography** — The trail offers repeated Matterhorn shooting opportunities; Air Zermatt helicopters occasionally appear in frame.
- **Hike down via Findelnbach creek** — Optional return route from Findeln all the way into Zermatt along the creek.

## Good to know
The tour was led by local Instagrammer Nicole Hunziker in partnership with Zermatt Tourism. The trail is groomed for winter hiking. Three restaurants are available in Findeln for those who extend the return route.
