After a six-month long remodeling project, the Hotel Löwen shines resplendently again since October 2013 in Schruns! The 4 star superior hotel marries natural tradition with modern design. The new, extremely stylish interior took our breath away! Let the photos begin to tell the tale…

Almost majestically, the Hotel Löwen reigns over the picturesque Montafon mountainscape surrounding the tiny, idyllic village of Shruns that it calls home. The Montafon alpine valley in Austria’s Vorarlberg region is ideal for all kinds of sports and recreational activities in winter and summer. But let’s take it one thing at a time…

The splendid Hotel Löwen in Schruns

Just pulling up to the hotel and the lobby entrance make the heart pound. Stylish decorations already hint at what awaits inside – a thoroughly stylish hotel carefully designed, yet replete with cozy “Alpine chic” .

The Vorarlberg regional traditions of barn wood and stone blend tastefully: welcoming colors, fine materials, and the lovingly staged vintage decor lend the hotel a special note.

Signing off as responsible for the modern design and style of Shrun’s new Löwen is the Zurich architecture studio Monoplan. Congratulations!

This first-rate hotel impresses equally with its furnishings, service, and restaurant, as well as the broad spectrum of wellness treatments.

A tour of the rooms and suites

As soon as you step into one of the 80 updated rooms, you get a sense of wellbeing. The appointments are stylish and the high quality materials have been used skillfully to best effect. Here too, wood, stone and chic-but-timeless design dominate.

Elegant-cozy comfort room

The hotel rooms are also very functional and promise comfort at a high level. The spacious wooden wardrobes come with motion sensor controlled lights in the wardrobe. Slick!

All rooms have balconies with captivating views of the panoramic Montafon mountain range.

Splendid view of the eye-catching Zimba mountain, the Matterhorn of the Montafon

And the highlight is the superlative Löwen Suite that boasts a beastly 90 m2!

Here, too, the stylish interior convinced us immediately… not to speak of the free-standing bathtub and private sauna with its fireplace-furnished relaxing room! Wow…. not bad!

Palate pleasures in the hotel restaurant

Multiple award-winning star Chef Claudio Urru provides the gastronomic highlights. This is a chef de cuisine with his own Wikipedia entry!

Chef Claudio Urru combines regional foods in subtle and creative ways with Mediterranean and Asian influences and convinces with a cuisine that is sophisticated yet rooted in local tradition.

In the restaurant as well you will feel at ease instantly and what we noticed in particular is the hospitable attitude – not surprisingly, for this is Austria after all. The friendly and attentive service staff does everything to make you feel completely welcome.

Banquette in the restaurant

It’s all orchestrated in a lionesque performance by Stefan Schulz, on whose nametag it says restaurant manager!

You can safely press him a little… he has an unshakably calm demeanor and is capable of entertaining three neighboring tables at the same time. Not everybody gets Walter’s sense of humor right away, but head waiter Schulz knew how to repartee even Walter’s ancient chestnuts with a light touch and lively eloquence.

After dinner, if so inclined, you can round out the evening in agreeable fashion in the new fireplace lounge, at the striking bar or in the discreet smokers’ lounge.

Prosecco for breakfast – served in style by Stefan
Naturally, the generous breakfast buffet with healthy choice section is perfectly suited for getting a healthy start on the day…

Tea lovers have the luxury of choice: exquisite tea varieties from Ronnefeldter and the Chiemgauer Tea Manufactory.

We, on the other hand, started the day with a tingly Prosecco ;-)

Spa treatments, wellness, sauna landscape and pools

At a proud 3,000 m2, the spa area is very spacious and full featured. For the athletic types, there is a fitness room and gym with modern workout equipment.

Take-it-easy types – us included – can take their ease in one of the pools, in the steam bath, and in the large sauna landscape.

Indoor Pool

Seen purely from the inside, we did not experience the same “wow” effect here as in the recently upgraded hotel, seeing instead a more classic spa atmosphere prevailing. But there is no denying that the wellness area is large and that it comes with the full set of amenities.

Tip: The magnificent mountain panorama can be enjoyed in particularly enjoyable fashion from the heated outside pool and Jacuzzi!

Montafon in Austria’s Vorarlberg

The Montafon has a great deal to offer active vacationers. The Alpine valley is surrounded by three mountain ranges and, besides the magnificent scenery, is distinguished by extensive opportunities for recreation and sports.

In winter, the Montafon transforms into a true winter sports paradise with opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping (?!), cross country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, etc. In the summertime, hikers, Nordic walkers, and mountain bikers get their money’s worth.

Our video impressions from the Hochjoch high over Schruns go something like this:

A trip to this natural paradise is worthwhile both in summer and in winter! We took advantage of the occasion and the brilliant weather right away to have a look at the ski area around Sennigrat Mountain Pretty impressive – even for us Alps-spoiled Swiss – what is being offered here in the area where the Snowboard World Cup takes place !

Our thanks this time go to

…the friendly, attentive staff of the Löwen Shruns, especially to the untiring restaurant manager Stefan Schulz and, of course, the new hotel manager Adriana Marchetti. Many thanks for the warm welcome!

A great big thank you as well to Julia Faulhaber of Faulhaber Marketing for organizing our stay!
