In tiny little Switzerland it takes just about an hour or so to get from Zurich to spectacular mountain resorts. One of the lesser known Swiss alpine jewels is Braunwald, nicely nestled on a sunny and traffic-free natural terrace in central Glarnerland.

Whether you enjoy winter hiking, skiing, snowboarding, skitours, sledging or snowshoeing – the wonderful mountain area of Braunwald offers it all.

You don’t ski but would like to learn it? No problem at all! As almost every Swiss winter resort, also Braunwald offers its own snow sport school. And of course you can rent your equipment here as well.

Where to stay in Braunwald

Braunwald offers a variety of accomodations; whether you prefer a comfortable hotel, privacy in your own holiday chalet or the ultimate mountain experience in a SAC hut – here you will find your accomodation that suits you most.

If you travel with kids, the absolute top venue for family holidays is the “Märchenhotel” (German for fairy-tale hotel). It was rated Switzerland’s second-best family hotel in 2011! The former grand hotel provides ample space for all ages to enjoy pleasure and relaxation.

How to get to Braunwald

Braunwald is car free – to get there you will have to take a steep funicular railway in Linthal which will take you up to Braunwald. This obviously is a cool experience by its own. It takes just over 7 minutes from Linthal station to reach the Braunwald sun terrace with its wonderful views.

And also to get to Linthal we recommend the public transportation. There are convenient rail connections from Basel or Zurich. Usually you will have to change to the regional train in Ziegelbrücke and it will take you to the Linthal-Braunwaldbahn station.

Once you arrive in Braunwald and you have too much stuff to carry with you, just take either a horse-drawn sleigh or one of the electric taxis.
