The Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort is a modern *****Superior luxury hotel offering anything you need to relax, recover, fill up your batteries and get inspired. This first-class hotel captivates its guests with its elegant furnishings, a gourmet restaurant and its wide range of feel-good treatments to choose from.

Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort

Until about a decade ago, today’s Lenkerhof was a health establishment, mainly known for its healing sulphur baths. In 2002, the wellness hotel was newly opened and it has since won several awards. The house has a bathing tradition dating back more than 300 years. Moreover, it has its own sulphur source, a stylish interior and two top restaurants! We tested them thoroughly…

On your way to the hotel, you will already be welcomed (“Wüukomme”) in the likeable Bernese dialect. Before you get to the administrative check-in matters, a delicious “chai tea espuma” welcome drink and a refreshing tissue will be handed to you.

The authentic Bernese hospitality will continue to accompany you throughout your stay. Bernese people are great, similar to the extremely friendly South Tyroleans.

Rooms and suites of the Lenkerhof

The rooms of the Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort are decorated in bright, friendly, warm colours which support a pleasant and relaxing recovery. All rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV and a B&O music system. They offer a wonderful view of the mountains of Simmental, amongst other landmark mountains “Wildstrubel”.

Lenkerhof’s Gault Millau cuisine

As is typical for members of the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Association, culinary art is of great significance at Lenkerhof.

In the cosy and atmospheric wine cellar with its well-assorted wines, you can follow the host’s invitation to the daily wine tasting and enjoy one of many sumptuous experiences.

Continue your culinary adventure in the restaurant “Spettacolo”, which has been awarded 15 Gault Millau points. This elegant restaurant offers modern “well-flavour”-cuisine with a daily (!) changing selection.

Each guest can choose from 15 different courses and compose his own 4- to 7-course menu. Of course, you can also have more courses than that and ask for a supplement at any time. On average, guests of the Lenkerhof order 6.2 courses…

We were allowed to catch a glimpse of the kitchen, in which intensive, vigilant work is being done. It is very busy in the kitchen, but at the same time quite silent: the kitchen staff is focused on working its way through the flood of orders. It is impressive witnessing how the 23-member kitchen crew and the service staff ensure that every dish gets to the right place at the right time. Host Jan Stiller personally explained to us how the system works…

If you prefer to spend the evening in a somewhat more intimate ambience with a southern European touch, you should try the second restaurant “Oh de Vie”. It has sublime Mediterranean cuisine and is suitable if you don’t feel like having 4-15 courses.

The extensive breakfast buffet leaves nothing to be desired. It is a culinary delight and it gives you power for your day.

Art at Lenkerhof

Wonderful works of art from flowers adorn various areas of the hotel such as the “living room”, as the hosts affectionately call their lobby/bar. They want their guests to feel at home, which they accomplished by creating a really warm and cosy interior.

We were especially impressed by the paintings. During our stay, the house’s walls were hung with spectacular works from the Martin Stucki Foundation (the exhibition only lasted until December 2013) as well as paintings by Jürg Opprecht, owner of the Lenkerhof. Due to the interplay of art and the natural stone of the stone walls, the art objects really stood out.

Wellness, beauty & spa at the Lenkerhof

“7 Sources Beauty & Spa” is the name of Lenkerhof’s spa. The name was inspired by the place where the vivacious, energetic Simme River has its source. In the extensive range of the spa, you will find a wide variety of modern spa facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, different saunas (bio/oil/aroma / herbal and Finnish sauna), steam baths, sulphur grotto, ice grotto and jacuzzis. From the warm sulphur outdoor pool, you have a lovely view of the mountains!

A cosily furnished restroom and a corner for relaxing with sofas complete the spa. However, these areas – with full occupancy of the hotel – are rather small. We were able to get a lounge chair in the nick of time :-)

However, we liked the practical idea of using clothes pegs and name tags for the bathrobes: this way, you can avoid mix-ups in the well-attended spa. Good idea!

Our thanks go to…

… Isabelle Trachsel for organising our stay and giving us a tour through the house.

Another big thank you goes to Heike Schmidt and Jan Stiller for the invitation and for the interesting information about the house. As usual for Relais & Châteaux hotels, the hosts were there for us day and night, they charmingly received their guests and of course, also say goodbyes to their leaving guests.
