The last part of our tour led us back to Thailand’s capital Bangkok. Again, we stayed at one of the W Hotels. The W Hotel Bangkok boasting Asian elegance is located in the dynamic business district.
The beautiful things in life always come to an end too quickly. We returned to Koh Samui on the speed catamaran, knowing we would be at the airport three hours too early due to the ferry’s fixed departure times.
Admittedly, we were already looking forward to doing nothing and counting suitcases at the airport. But an attentive Bangkok Airways employee switched us to an earlier flight to Bangkok on short notice, free of charge, and informed us that boarding would start in five minutes. We suppressed any stress symptoms and hurried to the gate.
W Hotel in Bangkok
In Bangkok, we were awaited by the next W. Situated in the renowned Embassy Row in the dynamic business district, it’s a stylish icon of Asian elegance. The luxurious lifestyle hotel also lives up to its stellar reputation and provides music, design and fashion to its guests. Both business travelers and leisure tourists find a place where one cannot only relax and work well. Regularly, the W Bangkok hosts in-events in a very modern environment. Trendy parties during weekends and art exhibitions enrich the daily routine. The old villa of the Russian embassy decorates the forecourt of the modern, 31-story hotel tower and provides an impressive contrast when entering the area. Inside the hotel, the lift area in the lobby is decorated with a breathtaking piece of art consisting of more than 800 tuk-tuk lights and an especially adjusted light installation. The carpets in the entrance and in the elevators are changed three times a day, from “good morning” to “good afternoon” to “good evening”.
In the typically friendly and courteous “W” fashion, we were accompanied to our “Spectacular Room”. The resonant name lived up to its promise because the room provides a breathtaking view of the city. An especially cool gadget is the tablet within the room, with “do what you want, I’m yours” written on the display of the remote control. With this tablet, for example, you can dim the lights, regulate the air conditioning or even activate the “do not disturb” button.
One doesn’t visit Bangkok just for a hotel. In that sense, our next target was the tailor. Just in this neighborhood, in Silom Road, is Tony’s, the best in the city. We’re not the only ones who think this; the jury of the Best Tailor Awards 2009 has also recognized Tony’s. After almost four hours of digging around and stroking cloth, we put together our collection. We were looking forward to the fitting, which took place the next day. For such a large order, Tony usually needs three days. Smaller orders are most often finished in two days.
Discovered some years ago, the Bee Garden has become a fixed part of our schedule every time we visit Bangkok. For more than 10 years, this restaurant opens each evening after 6 p.m. in front of the Siam Commercial Bank at the ITF Tower. This location has the real Bangkok feeling: a six-lane street to the right, Skytrains thundering overhead, and affectionately decorated tables on the sidewalk. These few tables are one of those places that gourmets should visit if they love authentic, down-to-earth cuisine. This street restaurant is easy to find. It’s located directly at the place where the Skytrain turns into Silom Road after the BTS station.
Another very rewarding experience is the Sky Bar of the Lebua at State Tower Hotel. Most people will have heard of this place by now after seeing the third instalment of the Hollywood blockbuster Hangover series. Located on the 64th floor of the hotel, this rooftop bar serves rather pricey drinks but rewards the visitor with a stunning view of the whole city.
So far, we also vote for the breakfast buffet of this hotel (Lebua at State Tower) as the best possible start to the day. But “Kitchen Table”, the W’s own restaurant, has significantly stirred up our view of Bangkok’s breakfast world. The interior architecture of the restaurant takes you into a different world. Artfully designed walls and tables invite you to stay and eat. At the buffet, an unbelievable wealth of delicacies waits to sweeten up your day. Asian, Western and intercontinental dishes are prepared at the highest level and served on porcelain from Rosenthal. Various Dim Sum, fresh noodle soups, sushi, homemade yogurt, a piece of salmon or, for our lot, even a Birchermüesli are on offer here. What you don’t find will be made and what you do find is perfectly prepared. To us, this buffet was one of the top highlights of this trip. Dear buffet, we’ll definitely be back!
Holidays often pass by very quickly and so the last day came way too early. At six in the morning, we had to leave our beds in the direction of Chatuchak Weekend Market. The Skytrain brought us there quickly. With more than 20,000 stands, this market is always worth a visit. A conglomeration of diverse offerings covers 14 hectares that are visited by more than 200,000 people every day for viewing and negotiating. As the name suggests, this market only takes place on weekends. Those who don’t want to miss this adventure should be aware of this and plan their stay in Bangkok accordingly.
Dozens of negotiations later and with full bags, we returned to the hotel in the afternoon for the checkout. Beforehand, we had to enjoy the beautiful pool area one last time. Our flight back was scheduled for midnight and the hotel was friendly enough to offer us a late checkout (4 p.m.) free of charge. After the pool, we quickly wanted to refresh ourselves. And the W would not be the W if this wish was not fulfilled at the highest level as well. Instead of the shower cabins in the fitness area, we were assigned another official room to shower and refresh ourselves very comfortably.
During our holidays – which we booked with Nezasa – one major highlight followed another. From the start, we felt taken care of exceptionally well. The trip was not only perfectly organized but also full of wonderful impressions. Nezasa’s simple system allowed us to book stress-free holidays easily!
