Just a few kilometers from the village of Sant Llorenc in northeast Mallorca we discovered a small jewel of a boutique hotel! The stylish finca hotel Son Penya sits amid olive, almond, lemon and carob trees and seekers of serenity and lovers of nature could not ask for a better place to stay!

Far from the touristic side of this Balearic island, here on the giant estate of Finca Son Penya time seems to have stopped.

Comfortable outdoor lounge

The owner-managed 4-star country hotel feels like a little oasis. You instantly feel at ease and instinctively sense: this must be what it’s like to arrive in paradise, where you can truly take a break from the ordinary, watch the sheep graze, fall asleep at night to crickets chirping and wake up next morning with a rooster crowing in the distance…

Perfectly idyllic!

Son Penya Petit Hotel Mallorca

This small oasis with 12 exclusive room was created by Mallorca’s star architect and designer Toni Esteva from old houses formerly devoted to livestock farming.

The Finca at dusk

The finca casts a magic spell over its guests already starting with the wonderful outdoor amenities of pool, canopy beds and well-tended garden. As a bonus, you have a sublime view of the surrounding fields and forests!

Wonderful property with olive trees and gardens

Add to that the atmospheric architecture, a combination of rustic ambiance and elegant design, and you have just the right backdrop for a romantic vacation…

Stylish interior

You will find in the public area a small salon with fireplace, a “living room” with sofa patio and Internet corner complemented by a library and reading room.

But in the summer months, of course, life as ever takes place outdoors be it by the pool, in the garden restaurant, or on the private patio of your room.

Lounge with a view

Your hosts in this idyllic place are Aina and Gabriel Massanet. Together with their son Xavi they personally do their utmost to look after their guests’ wellbeing. It is therefore not by chance that the boss himself serves breakfast. As Gabriel explained to us during an interview, this is how he wants it on purpose. For only like this can he get to know his guests and get a sense of what their pleasure is.

The interview with Gabriel Massanet (3:58, in Spanish) is available on YouTube.

Gabriel is well versed in German. But most often it is Sonia Cordes, a German who grew up in Mallorca, who communicates with the German and Swiss clientele. So, language-wise, there are no hurdles of any kind; you can feel right at home here.

The rooms and suites

The finca has a total of 12 exclusive rooms: six doubles and six junior suites. All are bright, stylish and purist and feature upscale appointments, including bathrooms with Jacuzzi(!) OK, in the summer months the Jacuzzi will probably see only occasional use, but having it in the room somehow seems just right regardless!

The junior suites have a separate living area next to the bedroom.

Each room comes with its own patio with sun lounges, for your enjoyment in privacy.

The finca has been furnished with great love of detail. Small, but posh – a genuine pearl!

Better dining in the hotel’s own restaurant

For your bodily nourishment, look no farther than the small restaurant with delicacies of Mediterranean cuisine and Mallorcan products. The ingredients are regionally-sourced; some even come from the organically-farmed hotel garden. But above all, in this wonderful ambiance everything can be enjoyed in a heavenly way!

Garden restaurant with atmosphere

Breakfast, too, made fans of us! A varied, continental buffet is served, replete with regional treats (the iberico dry cured ham was top notch!) Any egg dish you desire will be cooked to order. Also nice: the latte macchiato is not supersized like it is back home…

Breakfast in paradise

Wellness

The small but beautiful wellness area provides more relaxation for body and soul. It beckons with a heated indoor pool, sauna, Turkish steam bath, and relaxation room. Naturally, massages or beauty treatments are on offer. Since we had gorgeous summer weather (30 degrees Centigrade), we skipped the wellness area. It was too heavenly in the garden or by the pool…

Golf courses in northeast Mallorca

Close by the Son Penya Hotel are three spectacular golf courses: Pula Golf, Capdepera Golf, and Canyamel Golf. The hotel offers reduced green fees for its guest and also takes care of reserving tee times.

We recorded our impressions of these golf courses and how we fared on them in a separate report.
