Pilatus is Lucerne's local mountain and one of the most popular destinations in Central Switzerland.
The legendary Pilatus Golden Round Trip had been on our bucket list for a long time.
Together with our sisters Claudia and Manu, Walter and I set off on this trip: combining a boat, cogwheel railway, panoramic gondola, and cable car, the round trip connects several highlights in a single day trip.
Start in Lucerne: Boat trip across Lake Lucerne
The journey begins right at Lucerne train station. From here, you can reach the boat landing stage in just a few minutes. The trip across Lake Lucerne to Stansstad is an experience in itself: majestic mountains, historic villas on the shore, and the relaxed feeling of a mini cruise.
👉 Tip: Sit on the upper deck – with a little luck, you'll enjoy a light breeze and the best view of the lake shore.
After a leisurely trip, the boat docks in Stansstad, and the excitement begins: the world's oldest cogwheel railway awaits you here.
Up Mount Pilatus on the world's steepest cogwheel railway
The next highlight awaits you in Alpnachstad: the world-famous Pilatus cog railway. It is the steepest cog railway in the world and climbs up to a gradient of 48% over a distance of 4.6 kilometers.
During the approximately 30-minute ride, you will experience spectacular views: first through meadows and forests, then past rock faces – and finally, the view of Lake Lucerne opens up in all its splendor.
The journey itself is an experience you won't soon forget.
Summit bliss at 2,128 meters
- Flower trail to Tomlishorn : Panoramic trail with informative boards about the different plant species, their flower colors, and flowering times (duration approx. 1.5 hours there and back)
- Viewing terraces: Several platforms with magnificent 360° panoramic views.
- Culinary delights with a view: Whether in the panorama restaurant or with your own picnic – the view tastes twice as good here.
Descent with the Dragon Ride and panoramic gondolas
After your summit adventure, take the modern "Dragon Ride" cable car down to Fräkmüntegg. Even stepping inside feels a bit like entering a helicopter cockpit – huge windows give you the feeling of floating above the mountains.
From Fräkmüntegg, the gondola lift continues to Kriens, from where you can take a comfortable bus ride back to Lucerne. This completes the Golden Round Trip.
Practical tips for your Pilatus tour
- Tickets: It is best to book the "Golden Tour" combination ticket directly from Pilatus-Bahnen. This includes the boat, cog railway, cable cars, and bus – practical and uncomplicated.
- Duration: Plan at least half a day for the entire trip – or if you want more time for hiking or a leisurely break at the summit – it's best to plan for the whole day.
- Best time: It's worth setting off early in the morning so you can enjoy a little more peace and quiet at the top before the crowds arrive.
- Weather: Be sure to check the weather forecast – when visibility is clear, the panorama is breathtaking, but when it's foggy, it can quickly turn into a white nothingness.
- Equipment:Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a light jacket – even in summer it can be cool up there.
Conclusion: A classic that you have to experience
The Pilatus Golden Round Trip from Lucerne is a perfect combination of nature, technology, and adventure.
A boat, the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, an incomparable panorama, and the return trip by gondola and cable car – a day trip could hardly be more varied.
For us, it was an unforgettable day with our two sisters – and definitely an experience we can recommend to anyone visiting Lucerne or Central Switzerland.
