EXPO 2015 MILAN – Gems that dazzle

My EXPO 2015 totally subjective highlights
The way I see it, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all general recommendations. The way we process esthetics or themes is so differentiated and personal that we all need to form our own opinions.

Thanks for this souvenir photo, mom!

These are my favorite places, selected based on sentiment and hence highly subjective:

Ireland

A wonderful world. I think I forgot to raise my camera because I was so emotionally hijacked by this rugged, green isle full of myths and nature. Ireland created a relatively modest pavilion, but impressively grand picture worlds let us dive in and dream. Out of this world beautiful.

Morocco

Reading about the Moroccan pavilion a day or so before our departure, it sounded wonderful. I’m now convinced of it as well. Morocco’s treasures are presented in a colorful, very appealing manner. Little wonder then that sales are brisk in the shop next to the exhibit area.

Great Britain

My absolute favorite venue. I love wild flower meadows. I love rusty walls and I like bees. I found my place at EXPO 2015! The English not only erected a fascinating mesh beehive, they also created a unique, delicate aura that surrounds the pavilion. In the evenings, as dusk falls, when the beehive lights up, all its beauty unfolds.

Belgium

On Facebook I’ve read many reports on the great chefs of many countries. By chance, in the Belgian pavilion we were able witness such a spectacle, watching famous chocolatier Olivier Delvaux at work. And, of course, we got to sample his creations, too.

Japan

Ah, yes, the Japanese pavilion with its impressive wooden exterior. The queues always stretched forever and it closed early in the evening. We passed by it several times, but unfortunately did not manage to see the inside. Just looking at it from the outside was an indulgence. We were especially taken with the xylophone walk. By their motion and by their touches, visitors passing by the wooden members made them oscillate and give off sound.

EXPO 2015 Milano runs until the end of October 2015. All-inclusive deals incl. travel, hotel, EXPO tickets, and day passes for public transit are available from Railtour. This wraparound feel-good package is highly recommended. Should you want to focus on the EXPO exclusively, a hotel near the fairgrounds recommends itself.

Oh, and by the way… If you travel to the EXPO 2015 don’t forget Milan! That’s right, seriously. It just seemed impossible to me to spend a whole day only focusing on EXPO2015 and absorbing impressions on the EXPO grounds. That’s why we treated ourselves to a daily portion of Milan. In a separate article you’ll find three bites of the city that I found fascinating.

We want to thank Sandra Wohlhauser and Manuela Tulli of Railtour for the generous invitation, the expert and forthcoming advice, perfect organization and the terrific documentation, EXPO and transportation tickets. The little EXPO brochure was worth its weight in gold.
Many thanks indeed!
