Autumn in Piedmont is something else entirely.
When the rolling hills of the Langhe turn to gold and deep red and the grape harvest is in full swing, the region unleashes its full magic.
Instead of hustle, there’s an unhurried calm — carried by the scent of mushrooms and grapes.
What an atmosphere! Exactly as Walter and I imagined it.
A long weekend takes us to La Morra, where we settle into the charming Boutique Hotel Relais Le Rocche for a little escape (link to photos on Booking — our own photos at the end of this article).
From here, the region is yours to explore: idyllic villages, famous wineries, markets — and a remarkable concentration of outstanding restaurants.
Autumn in Piedmont: The Best Time to Explore the Langhe Region
The Italian Langhe region around La Morra, Barolo, Novello and Verduno is well known among wine lovers.
In the hills from La Morra to Verduno, Piedmont draws not just connoisseurs with its Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Barolo grapes.
In autumn, during the harvest season, the region in northwestern Italy shows its most intense side: the vineyards glow in warm colors, soft morning fog blankets the ridgelines, and everywhere there’s a sense of busy yet unhurried activity.
An absolute must is a visit to the traditional market of Alba — the epicenter of the famous white truffle region.
Between local producers, truffle dealers, pastificio stalls and Piedmontese specialties, I could easily spend half a day tasting my way through.
Perfect for feeling the culinary soul of the region — and building an appetite for the next restaurant visit…
If you experience Piedmont during the grape harvest, you’ll quickly feel what draws so many visitors here.
This mix of breathtaking landscape, picturesque villages, culinary highlights and authentic tranquility is one of a kind.
Anyone who loves good food, appreciates wine, or simply wants to spend a few days in a stunning landscape will fall for this region in autumn — instantly.
A Culinary Autumn in Piedmont – Our Restaurant Picks
Piedmont is paradise for foodies like us. ;-)
Traditional recipes, top-quality produce straight from the region, and a cuisine that puts honest flavor first — no frills.
We visited four restaurants that we wholeheartedly recommend:
Ristorante Borgo Sant'Anna – Near Monforte d'Alba
In a stunning setting above the Langhe hills, the elegant Borgo Sant’Anna near Monforte d’Alba serves modern Piedmontese cuisine — no fuss, but plenty of finesse.
Beautifully plated dishes, wonderful aromas, and a refined atmosphere that perfectly matches the unhurried pace of Piedmont.
Restaurant Ca' del Rei – Verduno
A cozy spot with unexpected moments: we actually run into Italian rapper J-Ax in Verduno — totally relaxed, having dinner with family and friends.
On the culinary side, Ca’ del Rei delivers with authentic dishes and warm, heartfelt hospitality. Ideal if you’re after that family-style Piedmont feeling.
Ristorante Massimo Camia – Novello
A classic in the Novello area — and for very good reason. Ristorante Massimo Camia offers an elegant, clear-lined cuisine that marries traditional flavors with modern ambition.
Perfect for a special evening where pleasure and atmosphere go hand in hand.
Ristorante La Sbornia – Verduno
La Sbornia is a little gem for lovers of traditional Piedmontese cuisine — and for anyone with an eye for stylish design!
Alongside the flavorful dishes by chef Carmela Straniero, it’s the interior that steals the show.
