Sunday brunch in Zurich: Urban Breakfast at the Clouds Bistro

In trendy Zurich-West, there are a number of spectacular brunches to enjoy. But only the Clouds Bistro located on the 35th floor of the Prime Tower, Zurich’s tallest building, will serve you a breathtaking view of Zurich and the lake with your breakfast. And so, on Sunday, we rose to those lofty heights to sample their “Urban Breakfast“…

In the summer of 2013, Clouds introduced a new breakfast concept : in the CLOUDS Bistro every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. they now serve an à la carte breakfast, newly named the Urban Breakfast. And, on the last Saturday of every month, from noon to 4 p.m., it comes with LIVE MUSIC on the side. It is first come, first served; no reservations necessary.

In the Prime Tower, high above Zurich’s roofs, enjoy a splendid view of the city while you let yourself be spoiled with epicurean delights.

Ok, admittedly we were a bit skeptical when we first heard about this lofty new breakfast concept – because CLOUD’s brunch buffet before had been simply heavenly already! But Sunday’s experience made us believers: Getting an à la carte start on Sunday also works extremely well. ;-)

We begin as usual by ordering our beverages. Besides the traditional coffee drinks like cappuccino or latte macchiato they will also brew exotic coffee varieties like fiery Carajillo or assorted varieties of tea. Of course, you can also treat yourself to a freshly-pressed fruit juice, recharge with Prosecco and Champagne or savor a non-alcoholic fruit infusion.

The CLOUDS breakfast is a true treat for the palate: a basket filled with croissants, Swiss Zopf plait bread and twist bread, served with confitures, butter and honey. Next, there is country ham and Graubünden-style air-dried beef, Gruyère und Brie de Meaux cheeses complemented by a choice of fresh fruit. Everything arrives at your table fresh as the morning dew on a tiered etagère tray.

And all this comes very reasonably priced at CHF 24.00 for two persons – with the great view gratis! The excellent value for the money was an eye-opener … where in Zurich can you still get that?

But to satisfy the cravings of your “breakfast heart” you can order much more from the friendly, attentive staff. Choose from egg dishes, salmon, tasty pancakes, bagels and fine Bircher Müesli at modest additional cost. In case you wish to tempt yourself ahead of time, here is the full Urban Breakfast menu.

When we asked Marisa Jud, Bistro Head of Service/Assistant Manager why they changed from brunch to Urban Breakfast, she said this:

Many restaurants today offer opulent brunch buffets. We wanted to get back to something more traditional, to offer our guests a breakfast as we knew it before all the “brunch hype.”

We find that they still offer an ample, well rounded menu. Even are in luck are those among us who need a sweet to top things off: The freshly-baked cakes and muffins or desserts served beautifully in small glasses will satisfy any sweet tooth. Mmmm-mmm, so good!

In our case, we topped off breakfast by indulging in a delicious Crema Catalana – for no other reason than…it’s Sunday!

For a Crema Catalana surprise – just dig down to the bottom…

Anyone who finds that this fare is still too light can also order something à la carte from the CLOUDS Bistro menu beginning at 11:30 a.m. – such as an Angus Burger with fries, for instance!

Since we ourselves felt perfectly well-served by the traditional “Urban Breakfast,” we saved the burger for another day ;-)

For anyone who would like to indulge in this Sunday delight, here is the Cloud flyer for the Urban Breakfast.

And here are a few more pictorial impressions from the breakfast in the Cloud “with a view.”

Many thanks to the Clouds team!!

We wish to thank Larissa Périat, marketing and PR manager, Marisa Jud, Bistro head of service/assistant manager for Clouds Bistro and their team for the generous invitation! The atmosphere and service were excellent. ;-)

We were joined by the blogger team of Mamiko and Dimitri Burkhard of Newly Swissed. Their report in English is here.
